Why do you need to upgrade your Joomla 1.5 core websites into Joomla 2.5 or higher versions.

One of the most popular CMS Joomla, used to have huge amount of websites of Joomla 1.5.x out there still nowadays. But unfortunately Joomla now officially stoped any further upgrades of Joomla 1.5 core and the latest version it has is 1.5.26, which still has many security vulnerabilities. Joomla 1.5.26 websites, especially working with old versions of 3rd party extensions like JCE editors, are easlity compromised or hacked out there. Tons of our old clients' websites have been reported being compromised in the last 6 months. Joomla 1.5 core is no longer a good choice to stay with for your website.

JoomlaCreator now provides full set of services of helping clients upgrade/migrate their websites from the old Joomla 1.5.x, 1.6.x and 1.7.x core into the latest Joomla 2.5.x or Joomla 3.x. Not only the core upgrade, we will deal with other panic jobs including transferring all content, user data, extensions and modules from the old website into the new Joomla 2.5 / Joomla 3 core. We follow the steps below to migrate your old Joomla website into the latest Joomla core.

1. Move the content of your Joomla 1.5 website into your new Joomla 2.5 / Joomla 3 core.

First of all, JoomlaCreator team will need to backup the current Joomla 1.5 version of your website, to make sure if anything goes wrong during the upgrade / migration, there will be no loss of the content or user data on your site.

After the backup is done, we will need to establish a new empty Joomla 2.5 or Joomla 3 site, without any content, and then use jUpgrade to tranfer your old Joomla 1.5 articles, categories, menus (and menu items) and user data into the new Joomla 2.5 / 3 core. After this is done, the empty Joomla 2.5 / 3 site will become a default look Joomla site with all of the articles and categories, all of the menus and menu items, all of the user data of your old website. Then we move on to the step 2.

2. Redevelop your old Joomla 1.5 website template with Joomla 2.5 / Joomla 3 template structures.

This step is pure coding work. We will use the existing CSS on your old Joomla 1.5 site to redevelop a new Joomla 2.5 / Joomla 3 template. It can stay the same look as how the old website was. Or if the client wishes, we can change the design with a new one you prefer. After it is done, we will deploy the new template into the Joomla 2.5 / 3 site we set up in step 1 above. After this step is done, the basic look of the new Joomla 2.5 / 3 website, would be similar to what your old website was, and with all content and structure you had on the old site. But, this is not finished, the rest work comes below.

3. Upgrade the extensions, components and modules you used on your old website, into the latest version, running under the new Joomla 2.5 / Joomla 3 core.

This is the most important work of the whole upgrade / migration project. We need to install the latest versions of the extensions, components and functional modules you had in your old Joomla 1.5 site, into the new Joomla 2.5 / 3 site we set up for you in the above 2 points. This step, is to make sure your new Joomla 2.5 / 3 website not only have the same look as your old Joomla 1.5 site, but also have the same functions as the old website had.

Below are some details for the upgrade of some most widely used extensions, components and functional modules:

Sitemap Component

Normally for most of Joomla websites, xmap is the tool in use for generating sitemaps of your website automatically, based on the structure of your menus. There is no need to consider about the problem of upgrading this component and it can be upgraded directly without any problem. This component, has 2 versions, they are:

For Joomla 1.5 core: xmap - 1.2.14

For Joomla 2.5 or higher core: xmap - 2.3.2

Editor Component

JCE Editor

JCE Editor is the most widely used Joomla editor. It is very easy to use. But the old version working in Joomla 1.5 core has very serious security problems and due to these problems, over 80 thousands of Joomla 1.5 core website have been compromised. The latest version for Joomla 2.5 or higher core is JCE Editor

Slideshow / Image Rotation Component

Frontpage Slideshow

Frontpage Slideshow has been the most popular slideshow component in Joomla for years. This component works under all versions of Joomla core, from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 3. When JoomlaCreator does the upgrades, if you were using Frontpage Slideshow on your old Joomla 1.5 site, we just need to backup your database and import it to the new Joomla 2.5 / 3 site, with the latest version (3.5.1) of Frontpage Slideshow installed.

SEF Component

SH404 is the most popular SEF component in use for Joomla CMS. It is for generating static URLs for Joomla websites. SH404 has 3 versions, separately working for 3 main Joomla cores:

For Joomla 1.5 core: SH404

For Joomla 2.5 core: SH404

For Joomla 3 core: SH404

To upgrade the SH404 from for Joomla 1.5 core into hgiher versions, the jos_redirection in the database needs to be changed into jos_sh404sef_urls. Then after the old database is imported, it will work all right for the new Joomla core, as we tested.

RS Series Components

RSFirewall, as one of the most popular security component in Joomla, can be upgraded directly for the Joomla 2.5 / 3 core, without any problem. We just need to install the new version into the Joomla 2.5 / 3 site, with the backup of black and white lists, which are in the jos_rsfirewall_lists of the database.

RSForm is very popular to be used for building up all kinds of forms for Joomla websites. It can be upgraded by using its feature of "backup/restore" as well.

File / Document Management Component

DocMan has been used for most of Joomla websites that requires files and document management. It has 2 versions for Joomla 1.5 and Joomla 2.5, which has the same database structure. So only need to install the Joomla 2.5 suitable version for the new Joomla core and import the relevant database.

For Joomla 1.5 core: DocMan 1.5

For Joomla 2.5 core: DocMan 1.6

UCD to Mini Frontpage

The UCD module (Ultimate Content Display) is widely used for Joomla websites to display latest articles and news. Unfortunately it does not support Joomla 2.5 or 3 any longer. So we suggest moving from UCD into Mini Frontpage if you need similar functions on the new website.

Beside for the 3rd party extension, compomnents and modules mentioned above, there are other extensions like for directory management (K2, Moset Tree and SOBI2), for online shopping cart (like VirtueMart), for social community (like Community Bukder and JoomSocial), for calenders (like JCal Pro and RSEvents) and so on, would all need to be redeveloped (if there were custom code on the old Joomla 1.5 site) with data filled in again.
